Presenting a proudly battle-scarred veteran of the bookish kind: The War of the Worlds (1948, William Heinemann) by H. G. Wells—an edition that looks like it has personally outpaced several tripods and at least one very disappointed curate. Sold, with appropriate fanfare and a straight face, by Crappy Old Books.

This copy is the literary equivalent of a well-worn greatcoat: Condition: Fair, which here means “completely readable and faintly heroic.” It bears the dignified patina of a life well lived—creased, softened, and ready to be actually read rather than worshipped in a climate-controlled oubliette. There’s no ISBN, because civilization in 1948 hadn’t yet decided to number every last thing it loved.

About the surgery: the spine has been thoughtfully rebuilt—a bit of home-front engineering in the spirit of plucky Woking—then capped with the original spine end placed back on top. This creates a dainty, marginal overlap, like a tiny architectural folly on a stately home, except it’s a book and far more useful. The result holds together splendidly, looks agreeably eccentric, and is now considerably more tripod-resistant than before (non-binding claim).

Aesthetically, it’s nice and tatty—the sort of classic you can read on your local common without fear that a light drizzle, an inquisitive labrador, or the sudden landing of a Martian cylinder will diminish its charm. In fact, the tat adds atmosphere. The text remains intact and legible, so you can experience Wells’s cool, surgical prose about existential calamity while also enjoying the soft rustle of pages that have, frankly, seen things.

Reader, if you want immaculate, buy a museum. If you want character, buy this. It’s the perfect companion for sitting on a park bench and muttering “No one would have believed…” while joggers give you respectful distance. Take it to the common, the train, the bath (carefully), or the bunker. When the Martians finally return, you’ll be the one calmly annotating their mistakes.
